Nick & Noah II: You Promised Me That You Wouldn't Break My Heart πŸ’”

The rain had started just as Noah pulled into the empty parking lot. It came down in sheets, hammering the windshield with a ferocity that made everything blurry — the lights, the memories, the pain.

He stayed in the car for a while, hands gripping the wheel like it might anchor him. The dashboard clock blinked 7:12 p.m. Nick was late. But then again, Nick had been late for a lot of things lately — calls, texts, the truth.

They hadn’t been here in months. The lake, the old dock, the spot where Nick first told Noah he loved him. Back then, everything felt like it was finally fitting into place. It was where they came after bad days, after long weeks, or just to be silent together and feel like the rest of the world could wait.

Noah finally got out, pulling his hoodie over his head. He walked to the edge of the dock, the wet wood creaking under his shoes. Somewhere behind him, he heard the sound of tires splashing through puddles.

“Hey,” came the voice.

Nick.

Noah turned slowly. Nick looked the same, and yet... not. There were shadows under his eyes. His smile — the one that used to make Noah feel like he could exhale — was hesitant now, almost unsure of its place.

“I didn’t think you’d come,” Nick said.

Noah shrugged. “You asked me to.”

They stood in silence for a long beat, the rain easing to a mist.

“I’ve been thinking,” Nick began.

Noah cut him off. “You promised me.”

Nick blinked. “What?”

“You promised me you wouldn’t break my heart.”

The words came out low, not angry — just tired. Worn out like the dock beneath their feet. Like something loved too hard and left out in too many storms.

Nick looked down. “I know. I know I did. And I meant it.”

“But you still did.”

“I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You didn’t mean to get close to someone else?” Noah’s voice cracked. “You didn’t mean to lie about it?”

Nick winced. “I was confused. We were arguing all the time. I didn’t even know if we were still… us.”

Noah shook his head. “That doesn’t justify it. Love isn’t only when it’s easy, Nick. You don’t just stop showing up when it gets hard.”

“I know,” Nick whispered.

“I let you in,” Noah said. “Completely. No walls. I let myself believe you were different. That we were different.”

Nick stepped closer, but Noah took a step back.

“I miss you every day,” Nick said. “Even when we’re in the same room. That’s the worst part — knowing I messed it all up, and I still miss you.”

Noah swallowed hard. His heart thudded in his chest like it hadn’t decided whether to break more or hold together.

“I don’t know if I can trust you again,” he said, voice barely above the rain.

Nick nodded. “I wouldn’t ask you to. Not right away. I just… I needed to tell you that I’m sorry. For all of it. And that I love you. Still.”

Noah looked out at the lake, the water reflecting a dark, rippling sky. Once, they made promises here. Now, all that remained was the echo of them.

He turned back to Nick. “Love isn’t always enough.”

Nick’s eyes filled, and he nodded again, slower this time. “But it was real?”

Noah hesitated, then gave a faint, sad smile. “Yeah. It was real.”

They stood in silence, the kind that’s heavier than any words.

And then, without saying goodbye, Noah walked past him, back toward his car.

Behind him, Nick didn’t move.

The rain had stopped.
